5 Restaurants Hailed as the Best Curry Mee Spots in KL

As much as I dislike rain, I do love that I’m given a reason to get a bowl of curry mee from one of my go-to stalls and restaurants. There’s just something soothing about slurping on this coconut-y noodle soup while watching raindrops trickle down my window.

Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about running out of places to get this dish because there are tons of hidden gems in KL that offer it. However, lots of trial and error had to be done before slimming down my list, and that’s what I aim to help you with in this list!

Skip the lines and prepare yourself for a mouth-watering read, as I’ve compiled all my go-to curry mee spots in KL in one single sitting. Let’s get started!

Girl and Mommy Curry Mee

Girl and Mommy immediately differentiates itself from others by featuring a heaping serving of fresh cockles on top of their curry mee. If you didn’t know, cockles are a type of edible molluscs that burrow in the sand—but they don’t smell or taste fishy in this dish!

Instead, this ingredient adds a hint of sweet and almost buttery flavour to the overall dish, complementing the thick spicy broth that curry mee is known for. This tangy and coconut-y broth perfectly coats the two types of noodles featured in this dish, making each slurp all the more satisfying!

The cockles are just the tip of the iceberg as well because each bowl comes with a hearty serving of roasted pork, pig skin and large chunks of tofu. You can also opt for the beef noodles with beef tendons if you’re not a fan of cockles.

Pro tip:

If you’re looking to add more crunch with every bite, we recommend ordering their fish skin! They are pre-fried, salty and go perfectly well with cockles!

Restoran 168

Restoran 168 is your typical no-frills curry mee spot in Kuala Lumpur, and we mean that in the best way possible! Featuring plastic stools, flimsy tables with uneven legs and ceiling fans, it doesn’t get as authentic as this place.

What it lacks in modern facilities is entirely made up for by the quality of their dishes. For starters, their curry mee recipe is nailed to a tee, from its rich coconut-y broth to its thin and thick noodles, and everything in between.

Each bowl also comes with a hearty serving of cockles, long beans, cockles, and our favourite, tofu puffs. These plush chunks of tofu do a terrific job of absorbing all of the spices in the broth, including the Thai basil leaves.

Pro tip:

We recommend doing it the overloaded way by ordering a side of char siu! You can then soak them in the same rich broth of the curry mee or eat them alongside rice.

Alor Corner Curry Noodle

Operating hours: Thursday to Tuesday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

When it comes to the price-to-value ratio, Alor Corner Curry Noodle is among the cream of the crop! This street-side stall will satisfy both your tummies and your tastebuds with their overloaded curry mee within the RM20 budget range.

We say it’s overloaded because each bowl comes with all the fix-ins of a textbook curry mee, from shredded chicken to cockles, bean sprouts, etc. These ingredients are all swimming in their homemade thick and fragrant broth that’s equal parts creamy and spicy.

Pro tip:

If you’re visiting this place, we recommend making it a part of a bigger food crawl since it’s located near Jalan Alor Food Street. It’s here where you’ll find tons of Malaysia’s most well-known street foods like satay, nasi lemak, char kway teow, etc.

4AM Curry Noodles

4AM Curry Noodles is a haven for customers looking to cure their hangovers after a night out because it opens at 4:00 AM! This legendary stall has been around for more than 50 years, and it’s still beloved by locals today.

To give you an idea of how sought-after their curry noodles are, they’re usually sold out in two hours, which is why they put 6:00 AM as their closing hours on Google. It’s not hard to see why, though, as their cheap prices are hard to beat!

It also helps that their curry mee is lip-smackingly good, especially the lemongrass soup! Aside from the perfect broth, their noodles come with various toppings such as bean curd puffs, cockles, and eggs!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking to add more kick to your bowl of curry mee, we recommend getting a side of their homemade sambal!

Jia Li Mian Noodle House

If you’re trying curry mee with the intent to fill your stomach, then Jia Li Mian Noodle House should be on your radar! Their bowls of curry noodles are famous for being filled to the brim with different toppings like blood curds, cockles and massive prawns.

They describe their broth as being more Penang-like, and we could totally see it with the noticeably thicker sauce. Furthermore, the flavour is much more coconut-y as opposed to other curry noodles we’ve tried in the area.

Lastly, since this is a noodle house after all, we recommend ordering a bowl of their laksa as well! It’s authentically sour and features tons of ingredients as well, such as shrimp paste, pineapple, sardines, and ginger flower.

Pro tip:

We also recommend getting their otak otak if you want to try more local Malay dishes. It’s a great contrast from the noodles, as it comes in the form of a cake but features savoury ingredients like fish, spices and coconut milk.
