Going to escape rooms and trying to unravel their mysteries is one of my favourite things to do in Kuala Lumpur with the family. As someone who isn’t super athletic, having an activity where we could exercise our minds in creative ways is such a treat to have in the city!
That said, I’ve been to my fair share of escape rooms in KL, whether it be for family bonding, team building, etc., and I’ve discovered what sets apart the good ones! Great escape rooms feature creative puzzles and one-of-a-kind themes shown through jaw-dropping designs.

One of their most famous rooms is simply called “Dancing”, but don’t be fooled! Instead of being something out of the world of Footloose, this room features a tragic backstory where a child experienced a tragic fate inside a dance hall—well, that got dark fast.
It’s not just about the themes that make these rooms work too, as they’re also quite atmospheric. From the visual storytelling to the ambient sounds, these rooms do a great job of immersing players into the world that MAZE has built.

The Bomb Battle is a much-welcome breath of fresh air that puts a unique spin on the traditional escape room formula. Here, instead of the usual spooky horror themes, friend groups and families can enjoy a more lighthearted theme that involves a, you guessed it, a paint bomb.
Your goal here is to prevent the paint bomb from exploding by going through a series of rooms that each feature a unique game. For instance, there’s a power grid room, where you have to solve a puzzle game that gets increasingly challenging the more levels you go through.
Another highlight is their laser room, where you have to avoid the complicated laser patterns projected through the walls to survive. It may seem easy at first but trust us, it gets far more challenging the more levels you go through!

Breakout Malaysia

Breakout Malaysia is what a lot of people immediately think of when it comes to escape rooms, and we don’t blame them! It’s one of the premier providers of this craze by offering unique-themed rooms that feature different atmospheric vibes.
One of our favourite rooms is “The Secret of Hocus” where you’ll be tasked with discovering the secrets of a notorious criminal magician in his abandoned theatre. To end his reign of terror, you must find three magic wands, which can only be attained by completing complex puzzles.
They also have rooms that aren’t typically scary to give kids and the faint-hearted a chance to enjoy escape rooms without the usual scare factor. A perfect example of this is their “Terraform” world, which is a creative escape room set in a space station.

Hauntu

Hauntu is one of those places that proves getting scared off of your boots is much more fun with friends. It’s a company that offers elevated haunted house experiences that take the simple premise of walking around a spooky room and dialling it to 11.
One of the things they do to set them apart from other traditional horror houses is that they use highly-trained actors who won’t only treat you to decent scares but also guide you. This way, you won’t veer away too far from the story or the path itself!
The escape room factor of these haunted houses comes into play through decisions players can make that could alter their experience. There’s also a sense of fulfilment, as each house features a grim mystery that players can discover through their playthrough.

Fifthroom KL is part of the ever-so-lively PartyBox 360, one of Kuala Lumpur’s best event spaces. As with the other attractions here, Fifthroom KL excels in its craft by featuring various types of rooms that will either immerse or terrify you (or both!).
Some of these rooms are so scary that you need to sign a waiver form before you can enter them! One of the most perfect examples of this is “The Barber”, which takes place in a creepy abandoned barbershop where you need to escape before nighttime falls.
Visual stuff aside, these rooms are worth checking out because of their creative puzzles, which are in line with their respective themes. There’s also a sense of physicality required to solve each room, which mostly consists of climbing, crawling, etc.

Their selection of rooms is one of the most varied we’ve seen in any escape room provider in the city. One day, you could be solving the mystery of a sunken city while on another day, you can escape the once-thought inescapable Alcatraz island.
